Despite its name, Epsom salt is not a salt at all. It is a combination of magnesium and sulfate that occurs naturally. In floatation therapy, it is used to make the water denser, allowing the body to float at the surface. Epsom salt is used by many outside of float tanks to reap some of the numerous benefits it provides.
Relaxes the Body
Epsom salt helps people relax by providing magnesium to the body, increasing serotonin and allowing the brain and body to reach a calmer state. When someone is under stress, the body loses magnesium. Because Epsom salt is absorbable through the skin, it replenishes lost magnesium, easing the body into a state of relaxation.
Epsom salt is an ideal source of pain relief. It relieves stress in the body and reduces inflammation, diminishing pain and swelling in the process. It is good for relieving muscle pain, migraines, aches, and cramps.
Improves Nerve Function
The high levels of magnesium found in Epsom salt can help achieve an ideal level of calcium within the body. Calcium is a conductor of electrical current, allowing for a healthy level of electrolytes. A balanced level of electrolytes is partially responsible for optimal nerve function.
Epsom salt is regularly used to soften the skin, especially calluses that form on the feet. The minerals found in Epsom salt naturally soften skin, and its crystallized form ensures that skin immersed in Epsom is deeply exfoliated. The exfoliation gets rid of dead skin, leaving behind softer, newer skin.
A few factors that contribute to skin wrinkles include dryness, loss of elasticity, and loss of some fat. Epsom salt helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles by making the skin softer and more hydrated. Although it’s not a solution for deep wrinkles, it helps with the fine lines that form around the eyes and mouth.
When taken internally, Epsom salt can help increase the water level in the intestines. This effect cleans out the colon and temporarily relieves constipation. However, taking Epsom salt internally without a doctor’s consent is dangerous and should only be used if you have consulted a physician first.
Epsom salt is also very effective at getting rid of toxins in the body. When a person takes a bath with Epsom salt, the sulfates draw salt, toxins, and heavy metals out of the body. This helps lessen muscle pain and also assists the body in getting rid of other toxins that cannot be drawn out through the skin.
